Feed Your Magic: Savory Mushroom Oatmeal

Moon Food:  Full Moon Mushroom Oatmeal

Hi babes. Happy hump day and full moon week. For this Harvest moon lunation I’m cooking savory oatmeal and sautéed mushrooms for an easy meal that feels like I made risotto but not, because it is oatmeal and it tastes gourmet fancy. Honestly ,whenever I’m feeling a little full moon electric I like to ground into slower cooked grain centered meals. I want something that fills the whole kitchen with delight. I want it to be the perfect leftovers for lunch the next day and I want to be in tune with the flavors of the season. Mushrooms, thyme, shallots and parsley are all beautiful flavor notes. Cooking is alchemy.  This recipe is a spell to ground and support your immune system, digestive system, nervous system anddd your magic. It is a spell for protection, deep cellular nourishment and care for our whole bodies. Mushrooms help ready our immune systems for winter. They are interconnected protectors and communicators. Oats offer our belly, heart and mind a lot of nourishment as well. Use any kind you want for this recipe. Cook it for friends or yourself. Put on my Full Moon Playlist and get a little witchy.

A Full Moon Ritual:

I’m sharing two options for a salt ritual because some people need different things. Salt and rosemary are the main babes. Both are so energetically clearing, protective and healing. I love working with them together and separately. Even simply hanging out with rosemary in your neighborhood is magic. Play, be intentional and enjoy. Release, dance it and glow.

Salt is an element I have worked with for a long time. Salt can be used for healing, protection, soothing, cleaning, cooking and transforming. From salt soaking baths to salt brines- I especially love using sea salt or pink Himalayan salt for bath/body rituals on and around Full Moons. Use finely coarse if you can. Use either one of these recipes or both to feed your magic this full moon or anytime xoxo

Extra Witch tip-place a small bowl of salt and some ancestral herbs near doorways for added protection and clearing as the veil thins this season.

Rosemary Salt + Sugar Body Scrub Recipe

3 tbsp cane sugar

3 tbsp sea salt

1 drop rosemary essential oil

1 tsp honey ( optional)

1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil, grape seed oil or jojoba oil ( you can mix all three if you want

Bath Salt Recipe:

1/4 cup of sea salt or Himalayan pink salt

1 sprig of  fresh rosemary or 2 drops of rosemary essential oil

1 tbsp olive oil

Extras:

Honey ( little dollop right into the bath water)

Candle

Smoky Quartz

Warm water ( bath or in a foot soak)

Directions To Create:

Body Salt Scrub: In a small jar or container add all the ingredients together. You can leave the essential oil out  or trade it for one you love. Alternatively, you can add a small sprig of rosemary or a few of the rosemary flowers to your scrub. Let it sit for an hour to over night so the oils secrete into the mix. Remove the rosemary sprig and compost when ready to use. Leave the flowers in to add floral magic. Mix the ingredients together, cover with a lid and use whenever you want in the shower or the bath.

Bath Salts: In a small jar add salt ( you can double the ingredients or eye ball for extra uses), rosemary sprig or essential oil and small smoky quartz into the jar ( if you have one, clear quartz and black tourmaline can be nice options as well). Mix it up with the intention of receiving and connecting to the support of the elements. Thank them. Cast a spell or intention with them for yourself and this ritual. If you have a large smoky quartz let the jar chill with that babe or you can put the quartz in your bath tub or foot soak.

Ritual for Salt Scrub/Bath:

Put some music on, get yourself something to write with if you want, light a candle and take a moment to appreciate yourself for doing this ritual. Take a shower or a bath. Use the body scrub intentionally and gently on your body. Connect with your skin and all your parts. This can feel overwhelming so take your time and be gentle. You can test an area first to make sure its ok for you ( don’t use anything topically all over that you have not tried yet). If the whole body feels too much you can use this scrub on your feet and soak them. Feet are the entry point to our systems in Chinese Medicine. Caring for our feet in this way ( soaking, brining and scrubbing lol) can be a really grounding and clearing practice. Also your feet will feel nice and smooth. Do whatever you feel called to do! Rinse off after using and feel your soft beautiful skin. Give thanks for the elements, do a little dance or movement after and blow the candle out as a closing. If you are doing the salt bath recipe fill your tub with warm water ( never too hot) and throw in any crystals you want, I love using a big smoky quartz but do you. Turn the lights off and follow the same directions just this time soaking for however long you want. You can release with words or just be still and send it down the drain when you are done. Dance it out or do some kind of movement/breath closing with your candle.

Please remember this is all an invitation. You can shape these rituals however you desire to feed your own magic. I recommend eating this savory oatmeal after or around the time of your salt ritual to replenish your body.

Savory Oatmeal

2 cups rolled oats

2 1/2  cups water Sub 1 cup for  immune or vegetable broth if you want ( find immune broth recipe in September newsletter archives)

1/2 tsp sea salt + 1/4 tsp ground black pepper

1/2 tsp ground coriander

1 tsp brown mustard seeds

1/2 shallot

2 cloves of garlic

Directions:

1.) Finely chop garlic and shallot. Heat a pot or saute pan on medium/high. Add olive oil or grapeseed oil and then shallot and garlic. Cook for 1 min and then add mustard seed and ground coriander and cook for another 30 seconds before adding the oats. Toast them for about a min. Next add water, salt and ground black pepper. Stir well. When the water begins to low boil heat, lower to simmer and cook for 10-15 mins stirring frequently as you would any oatmeal. Use a little less water if you want it more chewy and a little more water if you want it more soupy. This recipe cooks it to a nice solid mush. Set aside when done to serve.

Sautéed Thyme Mushrooms

8-10 oz of mushrooms ( any kind you want: Crimini, shiitake, oyster, lions mane, white button)

2 tbsp olive oil or grape-seed oil

1 tsp champagne vinegar

1 tsp dried thyme

2 cloves of garlic ( finely chopped)

1/2  shallot ( finely chopped)

½  tsp sea salt + ¼ tsp ground black pepper

2 tbsp water

Extras:

1 small shallot ( sliced and fried in oil to serve on top of your savory oatmeal)

2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley or chives

Extra Virgin Olive oil for dressing

Lemon Wedge for a an acid dose of brightness

Directions:

1.) Finely chop onion and garlic. Slice/chop mushrooms. Heat a large saute pan or cast iron on medium/high. Wait 1 minute, then add 2 tablespoons of olive oil or grape-seed to the pan and chopped garlic and shallot. Cook for 30 seconds and then add mushrooms and thyme. Mix together and cook for 3 mins on medium. Add 1 tsp champagne vinegar and 2 tsp water. Mix together, add 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp black pepper and lower heat to near simmer and cover pan to cook for 20 mins. Check on mushrooms and give them a stir every few mins. Add a little bit more liquid if you need to want to the pan if you feel like they are getting sticky ( if you are using oyster mushrooms you should cook them on low for 30 mins ). Remove the lid and raise the heat a little closer to medium. Season with another pinch of salt and ground black pepper and cook for another 8-10 mins to get them a little browned. They are done when they have a delish chewy texture. Taste them to make sure they are cooked to how you want them and have enough flavor.

When ready squeeze lemon wedge over the oatmeal and give it one more stir with some extra parsley. Pour into bowls, topping off with mushrooms and a sprinkle of remaining parsley or chives. a drizzle of olive oil and crack of ground black pepper. Enjoy alone or with an egg, chickpeas or your favorite plant based protein source.

Feed your magic and make it delicious in your own ways. Have a beautiful week and tender full moon xoxo
